Front Page Layout

This is my layout for my front cover, this will keep me get a better idea of where I'm going to place things and how big everything will be. So far I like the layout however I need to study my style models more and perfect it as I don't think I need 2 stories on the front cover but I will have a look and see what I can do. The main focus of this front cover is the image. From my survey I found out 90.9% of my target audience said that "images" is the feature that most attracts you to a front cover therefore I need to make sure I get the image perfect as its the dominant part within my magazine as its going to instantly engage my audience.

Planned Photos

Today I planned out all my 4 photos. I think I'm going to use more than 4 but I planned the first 4 out in detail so I understand what I'm doing and the type of photo I am trying to create.

Plan

Today I focused on planning my time for over the next 3 weeks as I need to make sure I don't waste anytime when it comes to creating my article, therefore I have made a table to help me figure out what I am going to do over the next few weeks. It will keep me organised and efficient.

Character Profile 4

Name: Jonathan Cavanagh
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Music: Mumford and Sons, Biffy Clyro

After doing 3 detailed profiles into female research I thought it would be a good idea to get an insight into males to see if I want my magazine to focus on a specific sex or both. Therefore I asked him to same questions as the girls, just see if his responses were similar or totally different.

1) What music magazines do you normally read?
Not a fan of music magazines I would say I would be them on the very rare occasion but not every week or anything. Not really a fan of magazines.

2) What music genre would you like the read about and why?
I like a mixture of everything it doesn't really bother me just something interesting and eye catching.

3) What do you look for on a front page?
I look at image and the features that are inside the article as I want to know what I am going to read about before I buy the magazine. Furthermore I also look at the colours as it's the first thing I will see when I glance over at the front cover of a magazine.

4) What would make you buy a music magazine?
The image has to be cool and interesting I don't just want a boy or girl standing their posing like it's some sort of fashion shoot I like something different. I like the articles as well I don't like them to be boring and the usual "when is your next album out" I want to learn something from them and interesting fact! Something that only that magazine will know. Most importantly to me is the price, I hate anything being expensive and certainly would not waste my money on a music magazine if it's expensive.

5) What images would you like to see in a music magazine?
Like I said before something interesting and a bit different, I want to look and it and think "wow and I need to get this as the image is so great." I like long shots if I'm honest as I like the background and to have a look at the surroundings.

6) Personally, what is your favorite name out of Fresh, Instant and Trend?
I like instant as it's catchy and relates to a specific genre of music.

7) What sort of articles do you like to read in a magazine and why?
I like to read interviews that ask unique questions that you didn't know about, like personal. I also enjoy reading things about concerts and interesting facts about other artists and what they are doing in the music world. Love a bit of a funny story as well, things that have ended in a disaster but in a funny way.

8) What type of artist would you like to read about?
I like bands if I am honest, but in general I like ones that don't follow the crowd and create a new style. They need to be hip with a catchy name. The name of the artists is key!

Character Profile 3

Name: Emily Campbell
Gender: Female
Age: 19

Music: Pink, Mcfly, Fun, Ed Sheeran, Olly Murs, Maroon 5, Fall Out Boy

I thought I would analyse one more female I think I will focus more on them when it comes to creating my music magazine. However this time I have went for an older one as its important that I engage all of my target audience therefore her opinion will be very important to me.

1) What music magazines do you normally read?
Normally I like music that is new and current therefore Q is a one I often enjoy reading however I wouldn't say I read them on a regular basis.
2) What music genre would you like the read about and why?
I often read just about anything that is interesting however if I'm honest I do like the chart music as I like the know what is in at the minute. For instance Jake Bugg is new and coming into the charts I love hearing things about him and other newly found artists.

3) What do you look for on a front page?
I look for a big image with text that stands out but doesn't look messy, I like to instantly look at the front cover and know what genre it is. Colours are important as well, because some colours just don't look right on a front cover like yellow and orange. You should stay away from them!

4) What would make you buy a music magazine?
Firstly the price is me is important as some magazines are just way to expensive for what you are buying! But also the genre of the magazine and the artists it features as I like the artist or even the band to have a slightly different look about them. They need to have something a little different and their own individual style. Like Katy Perry she goes against everything and is just her own artist.

5) What images would you like to see in a music magazine?
I would like to see a big image that attracts me straight away towards it. Possibly a female who is a role model and has a unique image and the artist to be doing an action and focusing on a task.

6) Personally, what is your favorite name out of Fresh, Instant and Trend?
I like trend and also Instant they both seem to be music magazine like.

7) What sort of articles do you like to read in a magazine and why?
I like reading interviews as they are easy to read and enjoyable, I also like reading overviews of artists that I haven't heard of as they keep me informed of what is going on. I like the article to have a set layout and to use spacing and lines well as I don't want loads of text thrown together when reading an article, I would say around 40% of the double page spread needs to be text the rest should be focused on image.

8) What type of  artist would you like to read about?
I would like to read about new artists definitely someone who is just a bit different from the rest of them we have a Lady Gaga and we don't need another one.

To further enhance my research I thought it would be best to ask Anna, for a different opinion she is slightly older than Hannah and has a different music taste and therefore I thought it would be good to get an overall opinion. I asked Anna the same questions as Hannah to help me get a focused well structured answer conclude.

1) What music magazines do you normally read?

I don't often buy them if I'm honest. However if I was going to it would definitely be Q and also Billboard I know it's American but it's a one I have come across and liked the look of. I love chart music!! Anything that is in the charts and on the front page of magazines I love. I love feeling of being up to date and in the know. So basically my music genre is current and new things that are in the top 20 as I listen to that often on the radio and watch the videos on the tv

I love seeing celebrities looking glam and gorgeous. I like seeing someone who looks amazing and that I could look up to! Like Katy Perry or Taylor Swift, they often are going something unusual and suited to their personality I quite like that too!

4) What would make you buy a music magazine?
The price of course, the image and the colours! It needs to attract me and grab my attention I like the image to be big and feature a celeb looking at the camera and in some sort of clothes that relate to my age. They need to be young and interesting otherwise I would just put the magazine down.

5) What images would you like the see in the magazine?
The bigger the better! I like colorful ones of person that reflect my youth. They have to be creative and well thought out, possibly action shots or concerts as I like to go to them. I mean who could forget Gagas meat dress? Things like that interest me however maybe not that far!

I like fresh and instant they both stand out to me and show something different. They both reflect the modern young society and that is what interests me the most.

7) What sort of articles do you like to read in a magazine and why?

I love interviews about celebrities as i'm nosy and like to know the gossip I also like knowing things that others don't so like the exclusive thing really interests me or articles about winning tickets to a gig or funny stories about concerts and they entertain and humor me.

8) What type of artist would you like to read about and why?
Young women like Taylor Swift inspire me, I like the natural look of them and they create a role model for me as they aren't overly edited or need loads of make up to look good! I like an artist would makes their own songs and has some originality  A bit like Gabrielle Aplin she is brand new to the charts and brings something different and has a beautiful voice.

Character Profile 1

Name: Hannah Stephen
Gender: Female

To start off my research I thought it would be best to ask Hannah some questions about music magazines and what interests her the most when reading them.

1) What music magazines do you normally read?
I often like any, however I do enjoy reading Q as it's a mixture of all the music tastes and it always has an eye catching picture on the front to grab my attention. If i'm honest I don't normally buy music magzaine but if had the right picture on the front I would be tempted to buy it.

2) What music genre would you like to read about and why?
I love indie! But however no matter I still love reading about chart music and it's always there and memorable. Its often playing on the radio and TV constantly therefore I can't help but like it, it's on the front of newspapers you just can't get away from it. One of my favorite chart artists is Jessie J, I'm going to see her in October she is abit different and edgy and that is why I like her.

3) What do you look for on a front page?
It needs to grab my attention or I won't be it. I like originality, something different possibly some bright colours or an interesting picture that fills up the whole page! No white spaces, I like the page to be filled but not in my face.

4) What would make you buy a music magazine?
If it had the latest gossip about a band or artist that would certainly grab my attention, I want to feel as if I'm getting something out of this magazine and extra bit of information that only I would know from reading this magzaine. Colours and images play a big part in it for me.

5) What images would you like to see in a music magazine?
I would like ones that represent my age and look, Modern and possibly more girls as I like to see what they are wearing and try to use their style! I like close ups and also long shots where within the image it looks as if the artist is doing something. For basically all of them I like them to have an artist in as I like to see them and it makes it more personal.

6) Personally, what is your favorite name out of Fresh, Instant and Trend?

I like instant as it sounds modern and something different it would be the one I would go for. I believe Trend sounds more like a fashion magazine if you ask me.

7) What sort of articles do you like to read in a magazine?
Anything that is personal and exclusive. I don't like boring questions such as "when is your next song out" I want to learn something from the magazine. I enjoy reading about interviews as they are easy to read and they are often a bit more personal and I feel they engage the audience more.

8) What type of artist would you like to read about and why?
I love new bands and artists the key thing for me, is originality I love them to have their own opinion and voice. Examples include things such as Lady Gaga, and Jessie J and Mumford and sons. All these are different and don't just follow the normal pattern of artist they like to do it their own way and that is what I love!!
